There are currently six states with independent commissions tasked with redrawing their state’s legislative districts. Among them, there are two states with commissions initiated by their citizens through initiative petitions (Arizona and California). These states’ commissions enjoy high citizen approval, open and transparent redistricting process, and districts that are responsive to the wishes of their constituency.
